I think it’s a wonderful way to view and demonstrate the delicate balance of a closed ecosystem.
Inside the small sphere (10 cm) there are shrimps (I can see 4), filtered seawater, algae, gorgonia and gravel.
The shrimps eat the algae and the bacteria. The system needs light to live.
The Ecosphere is a small biological battery, storing light energy coverted biochemically. The light + carbon-dioxyd in the water enables the algae to produce oxygen. The shrimp breathe the oxygen in the water and nibble on the algae and bacteria. The bacteria break down the animal waste into nutrients, which algae utilize. The shrimp and bacteria also give off carbon dioxide, that the algae use to produce oxygen.
Here are some pictures. I know it’s hard to see (they are so small) but you can see shrimp on them (it will be easier to see if you enlarge the pictures).
